Ipswich clams are also known as soft-shell clams and are named after the shellfish producing town of Ipswich in Massachusetts. Ipswich clams have a soft, smooth texture and a gentle briny taste.

Ipswich clams are not eaten raw, and are most frequently served as steamers – steamed clams served with melted butter.
